Ruth’s Hard Work and Faith

Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, have returned to Bethlehem after a tough time in Moab. So, Ruth decides to go out and gather leftover grain in the fields. Back then, this was called “gleaning,” and it was a way for the poor to survive. Ruth is determined to help Naomi, so she tells her, “I’m going to find a field where I can work.”

Gleaning refers to the practice of collecting leftover crops from a farmer’s field after the main harvesters have gone through. In ancient Israel, this was both an agricultural and a social law:

  • Agricultural: Farmers were instructed not to harvest their fields completely or pick up every stalk of grain that fell. Instead, they had to leave the edges of the field and any dropped grain behind.

  • Social/Law: According to the Law of Moses (Leviticus 19:9–10, Deuteronomy 24:19–22), this leftover produce was meant to provide food for the poor, foreigners, widows, and orphans.

So in Ruth 2, when Ruth goes to glean in Boaz’s field, she is taking advantage of this provision. As a widow and a foreigner (a Moabite), she had the right to gather food by following the harvesters and collecting what was left. She ends up in the field of a man named Boaz. What’s cool here is that Ruth didn’t plan this, it just “happened” (or as we’d say, God led her there). Boaz is a wealthy and respected man, but more importantly, he’s kind and follows God’s laws.

Boaz Notices Ruth

Boaz shows up to check on his workers, and right away, he notices Ruth. He asks his foreman about her, and the guy explains that Ruth is the Moabite woman who came back with Naomi. He also says she’s been working hard all day, only taking short breaks.

Boaz is impressed, not just by her hard work but also by her loyalty to Naomi. He calls Ruth over and speaks to her kindly. He tells her to stay in his fields, where she’ll be safe, and even offers her water whenever she’s thirsty. This was a big deal because Ruth was a foreigner, and Boaz didn’t have to do any of this.

Ruth’s Humility

Ruth is overwhelmed by Boaz’s kindness. She bows down and wonders why Boaz is being nice to her, a foreigner. Boaz explains that he’s heard all about what she did for Naomi. He blesses her, saying he prays God will reward her for her faithfulness.

More Generosity from Boaz

Boaz goes above and beyond. He invites Ruth to eat lunch with his workers and makes sure she has plenty of food. Then, he tells his workers to leave extra grain behind for her on purpose so she can gather more. He also warns his workers not to give Ruth a hard time.

Ruth works hard all day and collects a ton of grain—about an ephah. She takes it home to Naomi, who is shocked by how much she’s brought back.

Naomi’s Reaction

When Ruth tells Naomi about Boaz, Naomi gets really excited. She explains that Boaz is a “ family redeemer,” which means he’s a relative who could potentially help their family. This was huge because it meant Boaz could play a big role in changing their lives.
