The story kicks off in the town of Bethlehem, during a rough time, a famine hits hard. A man named Elimelech decides to pack up and move his family to Moab. He takes his wife, Naomi, and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion. Life in Moab doesn’t go as planned. Elimelech dies, leaving Naomi a widow.

But her sons marry Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth. For about ten years, things seemed okay until tragedy struck again. Both sons die, leaving Naomi without her husband or sons. It’s just her and her two daughters-in-law now.

Naomi’s Decision: Time to Go Back

With nothing left for her in Moab, Naomi hears that the famine in Bethlehem is over. She decides to head back home. At first, Orpah and Ruth want to go with her, but Naomi tries to talk them out of it. She says, “Look, I’m too old to have more sons for you to marry, and life’s going to be tough for me. You should go back to your own families.”

Orpah Says Goodbye, But Ruth Stays

After some tears, Orpah decides to leave. She kisses Naomi goodbye and heads home. But Ruth? She’s not going anywhere. She delivers one of the most famous lines in the Bible:

“Where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”

Ruth shows a crazy amount of loyalty here. She’s not just sticking by Naomi as a daughter-in-law, she’s embracing Naomi’s people and faith as her own.

Back in Bethlehem: A Bitter Naomi

When Naomi and Ruth finally arrive in Bethlehem, the town is buzzing. People recognize Naomi, but she’s not the same woman who left years ago. She’s heartbroken and tells them to call her Mara, which means “bitter,” because she feels like God has dealt her a bad hand. Ruth doesn’t complain, though. She quietly stays by Naomi’s side as they settle back in.

What’s Next?

The chapter ends with a glimmer of hope. Naomi and Ruth arrive just as the barley harvest is starting. That might not seem like a big deal, but in the next chapters, it opens the door to some pretty amazing things.

Why It’s Important

Ruth 1 isn’t just about loss, it’s about loyalty and trust in tough times. Naomi feels abandoned, but Ruth’s loyalty and faithfulness set the stage for a beautiful redemption story. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest moments, things can turn around.
